Gout Causes for You and Me

There are many gout causes that may induce a full gout attack. But what needs to be made clear here is that this condition effects people differently. That is correct, what foods and lifestyle choices I make can cause my gout to flare up and these same things can be the polar opposite for you and everybody else.

What causes gout for me? I’m glad you’re interested to know… After dealing with gout for 8 years already I know what makes it angry. Here they are:

  • Soy products
  • Shellfish
  • Niacin
  • Dehydration

Tofu = Gout for me!

Sounds strange eh?  Well it is true for me, some of those may sound familiar.  Red meat has little to no effect on my gout, but when I consume soy milk with my morning cereal I can start to feel my big toe stiffen up as the week goes by.  So since I do not like milk (reminds me of phlegm) the only choice I have is almond milk or rice milk which is not bad really.  Just make sure you get the vanilla flavored or else it taste kind of gnarly.

The vitamin niacin is what caused my very first gout attack 8 years ago and landed me in the hospital.  Was taking a daily vitamin for men and it had 1,000 times your suggested daily dose of niacin.  The reason I went to the hospital is because I thought I had broken my toe or had an infection (scary moment).  Took those idiot doctors 2 days to figure out I had a case of gout.  An intern figured it out of all doctors.

Of course when you get dehydrated by not drinking enough liquids your urine turns mellow yellow meaning your uric acid is probably spiked.  Drinking natural juice that is not acid rich and water is a safe bet. Cranberry juice and cherry juice is ideal, just make sure you get 100% juice, not some fake garbage.

So what does my current gout diet consist of?  It is easier to say what I avoid and seems safe.  The normal gout foods that we are told to stay away form we should, unless you are certain you know what causes your gout and what does not – through years of experience which can change over time actually.  Like I mentioned above I stay away from soy (which is a bean) and anything with too much acid and that nasty niacin!  Drink plenty of fluids and watch out for stiffness which is a warning sign.

I used this Out with Gout guide to help me find combinations of diet and remedy that I can do at home since the current medial arena is dumb to gout.  The people who know it best are the people who deal with it on a day to day basis.  If you want to know what to do when a gout attack happens and how to prevent it then get the guide and keep it in an easy to find find place either on your computer or print it out and keep it near the medicine cabinet.  A few bucks will save you the time of searching around endlessly online trying to find the latest info.  It really is all right there.

Funny how you meet people from all over the world who suffer from gout too.  I met a fellow in Hawaii who is a mix of Hawaiian, Samoan, and Chinese and he gets the gout in his knee, ouch!  Cripples him for weeks he said.  And met an lady in her 20’s who gets gouty arthritis in the joints in her hands that can last for up to a month.  That seems way more painful and inconvenient than my big toe gout, at least I could hobble around on crutches with one shoe if I need to.

For now my gout seems to be behaving even though I went off my allopurinol since my medical insurance disappeared along with my job.  I was kind of glad though, becasue it did not seem to do much as the gout still creeped up on me and the horror stories I kept hearing about side effects was starting to play mind games with me.  So today I watch what I am eating along with having these black cherry extract pills on stand-by in case I feel it coming on.  I take 2-3 pills twice daily until I feel the safe zone, meaning the toe is not swelling and the pain is gone along with full movement in my toe joint.

The guide mentioned above really helped me understand how natural remedies can help more over than for-profit drugs, which seem to do more harm than good these days.  Unfortunately I realized the Chinese herb pills I was taking years ago had lost their potency over time to gout, so you really need to be well informed of alternatives because one solution does not last forever.

Oh I want to mention a story about my friend Stuart who got gout after ingesting too much salt water while learning to surf in Hawaii.  He is in his mid 40’s and has never had gout or even knew what it was, so one night his toe swelled up to a big red apple and he freaked!  Was ready to call 911 and have the priest ready for last rights.  Good thing I was around, even though I am not a doctor I know what to look for and interrogated him on his eating habits (drinks like a sailor…) but he insists it was cause by the salt water becasue he feels “Hawaiian” now.  He went to the doctor of course just to make sure and was given that tiny white pill known as colchicine which did the trick for now.  But he keeps those black cherry pills in the medicine cabinet just in case.

If you are reading this chances are either you or a loved one has or is suffering from gout. The proper gout treatment is to be educated on what you are dealing with and know how to treat and also prevent it. Gout is powerful and relentless, no matter what you do it will come back so you need to know how to deal with it the best you can.  At least you know gout causes are sometimes unique to me and to you.

Make sure you take a look at this Out with Gout guide, it’s a good idea to get and keep it on hand believe me! It is the best gout guide out there with many treatment options and preventative measures for the gout.

Uloric to Treat Gout?

Doctor discusses Uloric as a treatment for gout

I have yet to try this medication *Uloric* as all “corporate” meds really concern me.  But has anyone tried it yet?  If you have please tell us how it works and if the side effects are nil to extreme.

Uloric Tablets

I always seem to struggle to find a treatment that has staying power.  The herbal home remedies work but do not last (for me anyway) and need something

STRONG and to keep this gout at bay!  This Uloric is new and I have not heard much, but I see them advertising on TV a lot. What that tells me is more and more people must be suffering from gout than ever before.  Usually treating gout was to a select group of folks.

Has gout become an epidemic?  I was recently in Hawaii and just about everywhere I went there some Hawaiian dude walking with a cane or barefoot because their gout has reared its ugly head and is acting up.  I spoke to a few of them and they told me its an ongoing things and nothing really works, but one big fella admitted he does not watch his diet. tsk tsk

It’s not secret that Pacific Islanders are more predisposed to gout attacks due to their genetic makeup and such. It’s not a disease for old rich white men anymore as a lot of younger males are suffering from gout for no particular reason they claim.  Hence the big push of Uloric lately.

I may try this if my gout persists, but would like some more info from patients who have been using it.

Causes Of Gout That Never Gave Much Thought

Your diagnosis of gout may perhaps come with facts and warnings about the foods you eat and what you’ll be able to do to prevent further attacks. You may be told your condition is hereditary in a lot of cases, and which you ought to follow certain measures to obtain rid of one’s ache when you might have an attack. Nevertheless, you’ll find other causes of gout of which you may not be aware.

This means you could have gout when no one particular else with your family has been diagnosed, and it can also mean you will discover steps it is possible to take to assist with the soreness and discomfort associated with this condition.

Heredity alone will not indicate that you will develop gout. You’ll find other aspects that will make a difference in whether or not you go on to develop this.

Some studies suggest that a individual with insulin resistance is far more likely to have gout than those without. Insulin resistance occurs when the physique produces too significantly insulin simply because it is not recognizing the existing levels. Eventually this situation can lead to diabetes if left uncontrolled. Insulin resistance may well also be a chance factor in developing it for some people. Getting insulin resistance under manage can support lower this chance, just one of many gout causes that can come into play.

When it comes to why gout attacks happen despite your finest attempts at following a low purine very good diet, you’ll find a number of aspects outside of one’s handle which could come into play. A single example may be an injury to a joint. Sustaining an injury to any joint with your human body makes that joint much more susceptible to the build up of uric acid crystals which can be related with gout and bring you so a great deal agony.

On the other hand, you don’t need to sustain a joint injury to have a flare up of gout. Just having an inordinately high amount of strain on any joint can leave it susceptible to an attack. If you might have hip wear and tear, you’re at threat of having a issue with it in your hips. The same could be said if you’ve had tension on any other joints. What you may think of as a flare up of pain connected with an injury may well in fact be a new area with your entire body wherever uric acid crystals have started to form. Although this is a fairly rare cause of gout, it might be a real possibility for some sufferers.

1 gout risk factor that may be out of one’s manage is temperature. For sufferers who live in cool climates in which winters are cold, gout attacks can boost over the winter months. It can be crucial to ensure you keep the joints which are susceptible to these attacks warm. If its your feet that tend to feel the brunt of gout attacks then investing in some excellent high quality, water proof shoes and thick socks may support to maintain cold-related gout at bay.

All of these uncommon brings about of these attacks are components which are complicated to control, but knowledge that they can contribute to your flare-ups can assistance you additional accurately take care of the soreness. When any joint in the system is compromised in any way, it is much more susceptible to being a new place where uric acid crystals form.

The Best Treatments For Gout Using Home Remedies and Modern Medicine

Gout is a form of arthritis and a nightmare, if you have ever had you know what I mean. Usually gout effects the big toe joint in men but has made appearances in woman as well. Tiny uric acid crystals form into needle like spears that get lodged in your joints but always seems to end up in the foot with other areas affected including the ankle, sometimes knee and is also extremely painful. Some people suffer from this all over their body and for some reason Pacific Islanders are more susceptible to gout, my 27 year old friend Richard in Hawaii had to spend time in the hospital for a gout attack that was in almost in every joint in his body and this was not the first time, Richard’s condition is hereditary like his father before him and down the line.

Diet and heredity do play a major part, if one has a high level of uric acid in the blood chances are they can develop gouty arthritis because the uric acid is not being expelled properly by the body. The joke is that only rich people get it because of all the fancy foods they eat like duck, liver, liquors, and cheesecakes. There are many famous people in history who have suffered from gout.

What is the best gout treatment?  There is either home remedies, homeopathic treatments and of course tradition modern medicine. A flare up may only occur once or twice in a lifetime due to poor diet like red meats, alcohol, and shellfish just to name a few so if that’s the case and you watch your diet than it won’t be a problem again. Others have chronic gout like yours truly and needs to keep a close eye on what I eat as well as what remedies work for me because there is a lot of trial and error in treating this nasty painful condition.

Some home remedies include consuming black cherries, black cherry juice concentrate, and a nauseating concoction of apple cider vinegar with baking soda, this may be wicked but it works wonders for a lot of people. There are also Chinese herbal supplements that work very well that include extracts from black cherries, blueberries, celery, etc.

A Doctor may prescribe colchicine to knock out the gout during an attack and tell you to cut back on fatty foods, red meats, and alcohol, basically all the favorite foods that are now bad for you. A steroid or cortisone shot to the the effected joint is given when the gout just wont let up. If you keep getting flare ups the Doctor may also prescribe allopurinol which is the most popular drug to keep gout from reoccurring via lowering your uric acid count.

My story is that the gout kept coming back no matter what I did and some remedies did work but lost its potency after time so switching to another treatment was an option, thankfully there are a lot of options for treating gout.

As you can see there are in fact many treatment options and since gout is tricky to treat you may have to experiment a little because sometimes the modern medicine your doctor prescribes may not even dent the condition and a few home remedies will knock it out completely.

Harmful Side Effects of the Medication Allopurinol used in the Treatment for Gout

allopurinol-tabletsSo you just visited the doctor for a case of the arthritis condition gout and you were prescribed a medication in tablet form Allopurinol (when the cherry juice is not enough), which is the most prescribed long term medication for the treatment of gout which you will be taking for the rest of your life.  Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, it works by lowering the body’s production of uric acid and is a very strong medication.

It can take almost a month for the medicine to kick in as it slowing lowers the production of uric acid in your body.  The pain and swelling you experience in the toe joint are the uric acid crystals that have settled in there because you have too much uric acid in the blood and no where for it to go thus causing inflammation in your joints, sometimes in more places than your toe like ankle, knee, leaving you suffering from gout.

What a Doctor may do for Gout?

evil_dr_zorkSo you just can’t take it anymore and decide to go to the ER or see your Doctor.  Don’t even think about that hacksaw in your garage, put it down! :)   Here is what the good ole Doc may prescribe

  • Colchicine (tiny white tablets) is an anti-inflammatory medication used to prevent and ease current gout attacks. (harsh on your guts though)
  • Steroid or Cortisone shot injected to the joint with a big ass needle! (yeah it hurts, but your pain is soooo bad you won’t mind and it works fast, I had it done in the ER!)
  • Allopurinol is a medication used to treat chronic gout.  Does not relieve pain or inflammation.  Takes a about month for it to work, its preventative medicine (side effects are arguably bad, another contradiction I say).
  • Anti inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen (Advil) in prescription dosage.
  • Take it easy, rest the foot/area and keep it elevated.  Cold packs help with pain.
  • Some Doc’s do give good advice on home remidies as mentioned here at  ihatemygout.com in conjunction with modern medicine!
